Nick Carmichael Nick Carmichael BVM&S, BSc VetSci(Hons), Diploma VCS(Syd), Diploma RC Path, Diplomate ECVCP, MRCVS
RCVS recognised specialist in clinical pathology

Nick graduated from Edinburgh in 1980 with an Honours degree in Pathological Sciences and in 1982 as a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. After a year with the PDSA in London, he completed a Diploma of Veterinary Clinical Studies (Small Animal) at the University of Sydney 1985. For the following seven years he worked in Small Animal Practice undertaking a mixture of first and second opinion work. Nick joined Idexx (formerly Grange Laboratories), the largest veterinary laboratory in the UK in 1992 as Head of Clinical Pathology with responsibility for the interpretation of haematology, biochemistry and endocrinology results. His clinical interests include haematology, coagulation, endocrine and neurological disease. As well as reporting on all aspects of Clinical Pathology he also has a special interest in cytology and the laboratory evaluation of CSF. In 2003 Nick became a diplomate of the Royal college of Pathologists in veterinary clinical pathology. Nick is treasurer of the ESVCP and referees papers for The Journal of Small Animal Practice, The Veterinary Record and The European Journal of Companion Animal Practice. Andy TorranceAndrew Torrance MA, Vet MB, PhD, MRCVS, Diplomate ACVIM, Diplomate AVCP,
RCVS recognised specialist in clinical pathology


Andy trained at Cambridge University, UK and Michigan State University, USA. He obtained a doctorate from the University of London in veterinary physiology. He holds two post graduate diplomas that distinguish him as a specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and Medicine. He has written numerous papers and delivered lectures to veterinary surgeons nationally and internationally. Andy was the Director of Clinical Pathology within Axiom, the UK’s second largest private veterinary laboratory and is presently co-founder of TDDS. Contact Andy.
Karen Scott

Karen trained in both human and animal Haematology and Biochemistry firstly at the Royal Marsden Hospital and then later at Covance Laboratories, the UK’s largest Pharmaceutical CRO.
From 1998 until 2003, Karen was Client Services and Marketing Manager for IDEXX Laboratories, the UK’s largest private veterinary laboratory. As well as being a qualified biomedical scientist, she holds a BSc in Genetics and a Certificate in Management and has over 15 years experience in sample logistics, laboratory processing and operational management. Karen is laboratory director for CTDS.

Doug Hayward BVSc, BSc, MRCVS

Doug was born and raised in Johannesburg , South Africa . After completing his schooling, he attended the University of Pietermaritzburg until 1995 when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Grassland Science. He then attended the University of Pretoria , Onderstepoort , South Africa and graduated as a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2000. After six months in South Africa working in a mixed avian/small animal practice, he emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2001. After spending one and a half years in small animal practice in Luton , he took six months off from veterinary practice to travel, followed by two and a half years in small animal practice in Epsom. He joined CTDS in February 2006 as Senior Resident in Clinical Pathology to pursue his interest in veterinary laboratory diagnostics and cytology .

Helen Pattinson

Helen grew up in Somerset. After an undergraduate degree in Pathology, she completed her veterinary training at Cambridge Veterinary School, graduating in 2002. After an initial year in small animal practice in South West Wales, she completed a small animal internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. Following a further 2 years in small animal practice in Milton Keynes and a short period as a locum, she joined CTDS in March 2007 as a resident in veterinary clinical pathology.

Phillippa Naylor

Phillippa trained in both human and veterinary microbiology, firstly at St James's Hospital, Leeds and later as senior microbiologist at IDEXX laboratories. Phillippa has also trained in the forensic science service.
Phillippa has over 20 years experience in veterinary microbiology and has special interests in veterinary parasitology (equine and exotics are a particular interest), faecal analysis and equine bacteriology. Phillippa is senior microbiologist for CTDS.

Katie Barker

Katie trained in animal husbandry at Askham Bryan college and subsequently worked as a veterinary nurse for 3 years in several mixed and small animal practices. More recently Katie worked in customer care and sales before returning to her chosen veterinary profession.

Sarah Wynne

Sarah trained in animal management at Park Lane college and subsequently worked as a veterinary nurse in both small and exotic practices. Initially Sarah worked in the RAF and then spent some time working with reptiles and zoo animals in her home town of Chester before moving to Yorkshire in 2003. Sarah is gaining some valuable laboratory experience with CTDS before starting her veterinary degree in 2007.
