About CTDS.
After just over 3 months of trading we are pleased with the progress made so far and would like to thank you for your support. Hopefully you are more than happy with the service we offer but as always please do let us know if you think we can improve.
From this…..
When we first looked at Blacksmiths Forge as a site for the lab it seemed quite a challenge.
The building had most recently been used as an ironmonger’s workshop as well as storage for the rest of the estate. But unperturbed by the initial view and with a determination not to be stuck in some huge office block, and a lot of hard work, this is where we are now.
To this………
A well equipped modern veterinary laboratory offering a full diagnostic service. Situated in the beautiful grounds of Brookfield House on the outskirts of Garforth, the lab is situated in an old Blacksmiths Forge.
Although now housing a modern veterinary laboratory we have tried to keep an authentic feel to the building. Brookfield House, originally part of the Dower house for Temple Newsam estate, was built in the middle of the 17th Century. In 1910 it was sold to Bartles auctioneers then being sold to Edwards motors of Doncaster.
The present owner has since sympathetically renovated all the buildings, including the farmstead rented by him in 1962. The premises we are now in, were originally a cart shed for the house and then later a Blacksmiths Forge. The facilities are excellent and the surroundings rather delightful.

Below is a metastrongyle larva we found in a bronchial wash in a young dog with a chronic cough,
probably Angiostrongylus vasorum.
Infections usually present with coughing or dyspnoea and mixed alveolar – interstitial pattern on
X-ray, mainly in the caudodorsal lung fields. About one third of cases however also have bleeding disorders, GI signs and pyrexia so the clinical presentation is quite variable. Diagnosis can be made on Baermann flotation of faeces or cytology of bronchial washes. Only about 50% of cases show an eosinophilia. Treatment with Fenbendazole at 50mg/kg for a minimum of 5 days is usually curative.
Nick is a co-author of a new paper on this condition soon to be presented in JSAP. If you have any suspect cases please give him a ring or email nick@ctdslab.co.uk
Test updates.
1. Allergies
We are pleased to be able to now offer an extended range of allergy tests to complement those already listed in our price list– please call the lab or visit www.ctdslab.co.uk/allergy.html for further information and fact sheet.
•CTDS environmental screen for the dogs and cats – > 33 single allergens and mixes. (£75.00 reported within 7 days).
•CTDS food allergen screen for the dogs – 20 single allergens. (£75.00 – reported within 7 days).
•CTDS combined food and environmental – both of the above for £145.00.
2. Cytologies
All our cytology submissions both aspirates and fluids are reported on the same day of receipt. We don’t routinely include microbiology to all our fluid analysis as in our experience it adds little value to most cases and can add unnecessary expense and delay in reporting. Microbiology may be added to a fluid cytology if required, or if considered necessary, by adding C9 to your request or C9 if indicated if you want to leave it up to us.
