Failure of passive transfer of immunity leaves foals at risk of septicaemia. CTDS offers a same day rapid turnaround test to assess the actual concentration of IgG and adequacy of colostrum absorption.
In foals with adequate levels of colostrum absorption, IgG levels would be expected to be more than 8 g/l at 24 hours of age. Serum IgG levels of 4 - 8 g/l indicate partial failure of passive transfer and such foals are at risk of septicaemia. Very low levels of less than 4 g/l indicate inadequate colostral absorption leaving the foal at high risk of septicaemia and other serious infections.
